PLAINS RIFLE PERCUSSION .67
Maker unknown - Modified percussion plains rifle. Appears to have been a rifle that was reamed out smoothbore. Back action lock with German silver buttplate which is cut for a patch box but doesn't have one. According to Army records weapon was captured from "Hostile Indians."

Barrel: VEREIN ZUM SCHUTZE DEUTSCHER EINWANDERER IN TEXAS. (Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas.) R.

1909 Catalog #2026 - "Musket. Muzzle Loading Percussion Musket. Cal..655. Sporting arm. Octagon barrel. Inlaid in barrel, Verein Syzum Schutze, Deutscher Einnand errer in Texas. Captured from Hostile Indians."
Exhibit label: "IMMIGRANT'S GUN .67 caliber - The original use of this weapon is indicated by the inscription engraved in German in to the top of the barrel: 'Society for the protection of German immigrants in Texas.' This piece sports a U.S. military trigger assembly and guard and a butt plate for an early sliding wooden patchbox cover, indicating that it had been rebuilt or assembled from a miscellany of parts. The original barrel was rifled, but the piece has been reamed out to make it a smooth bore."
LOAN HISTORY:
Army# 1177 - Weapon loaned to the Sahara Antique Gun Show, Hotel Sahara, Las Vegas, Nev. from 20 January 1969 to 2 February 1969. At that time weapon was appraised at $250.00.
