Object Description:

U.S. RIFLE MODEL 1884 TRAPDOOR .45-70
Manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield, Ma. - Standard single-shot Model 1884 breechloading rifle. Somewhat of a mixed model with 1884 breechblock, early sight, barrel band cut for Buffington rear sight. Two bands. Weapon weighs approximately 9.3 lbs.

Markings:
Lock: Eagle. U.S./SPRINGFIELD forward of hammer.
Breechblock: U.S./MODEL/1884.
Barrel: V/P/Eaglehead/P.
Bands: U.
Stock: P in circle.
Buttplate: US.

1909 Catalog #0387 - "Rifle. Sp'f'd Breech Loading Rifle. Cal..45. Mod. 1884. Tang screw missing."

Exhibit label: "M1884 Rifle .45 caliber. 1885-1890. 232,500 made. This model, including carbine and cadet rifle versions, embodied improvements in the 'Trapdoor' design, adapted for a heavier bullet."
