Object Description:
U.S. RIFLE M14 "GUERRILLA RIFLE" 7.62MM SN# X-42
Manufactured by Harrington & Richardson, Worcester, Ma. in 1962 - Modified M14. Experimental "Guerrilla Rifle" as modified by Harrington & Richardson. Select switch, hinged buttplate, non-ventilated plastic handguard. Weapon weighs approximately 8 lbs. Weapon complete with 20-round detachable box magazine.
Markings:
Receiver: U.S. RIFLE/7.62MM M14/H&R ARMS CO./X-42.
Bolt: 7790186/HRT A16/B11.
Barrel: H R 7790190 6-62 AC.
Weapon transferred to the Museum on 7 January 1965. At that time weapon was appraised at $75.00.
HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:
1JAN58 - 30JUN58 - "A feasibility study was begun on guerilla warfare weapons. Recently initiated study was in the formative stage and progressing satisfactorily."
Notes: "It appears that nobody cares, but the word guerra is Spanish for war. Guerrilla then means 'little war,' and one who engages in it is a guerrillero. A gorilla is something else entirely." - Jeff Cooper, GUNS & AMMO, May 2004.
