This collection of prints, done on a uniform size white paper was a student project. The instructor for the class was Vance Studley. The colophon indicates that the students participated in the inaugural Typographic Studies Workshop, Art Center College of Design. Quotations printed by the students with innovative designs and/or typography include among others: 1) Of the many worlds which man did not receive as a gift of nature, but which he created with his own spirit, the world of books is the greatest (Herman Hesse), 2) Letters are symbols which turn matter into (Alphonse de Lamartine), 3) Type is the most eloquent means of expression in every epoch of style. Next to architecture it gives the most characteristic portrait of a period and the most severe testimony of a nations intellectual status (Peter Behrens), and 4) Typography is a tool of communication. It must be communication in its most intense form. The emphasis must be on absolute clarity...legibility. Communication must never be impaired by prior esthetics. Letters must never be forced into a preconceived framework, for instance a Square (Laszlo Mohoy-Nagy).
